How Much Does a Fuseboard Replacement Cost in 2026?
A straightforward guide from a NAPIT-registered Rotherham electrician
One of the most common questions we get asked at MP Electrical is about the cost of replacing a fuseboard. If you have been told your consumer unit needs upgrading, or you have noticed your old fuse box is looking tired and outdated, this guide will help you understand what is involved and what you should expect to pay.
What is a fuseboard replacement?
A fuseboard replacement involves removing your old fuse box or consumer unit and installing a modern unit that meets current BS 7671 wiring regulations. Modern consumer units use RCBOs or RCDs that trip instantly when they detect a fault, protecting you from electric shock and reducing fire risk.
Why do fuseboards need replacing?
There are several reasons your electrician might recommend a new board. Old rewirable fuse boxes do not offer the same level of protection as modern units. If your board does not have RCD protection, it cannot detect earth faults quickly enough to prevent serious injury. Insurance companies are also increasingly asking about the age and condition of electrical installations.
Common signs you need a new fuseboard include frequently tripping fuses, a board with a wooden back, rewirable fuses instead of MCBs, scorch marks around the board, or if your existing board simply does not have enough ways for your circuits.
What affects the cost?
Several factors influence the final price of a fuseboard replacement:
Board type — A basic dual-RCD board is the most affordable option, while an all-RCBO board (where every circuit has individual protection) costs more but gives the best protection.
Number of circuits — A property with more circuits needs a larger board with more ways, which increases the cost slightly.
Earthing upgrades — Older properties often need their earthing and bonding brought up to current standards at the same time, which adds to the job but is essential for safety.
Remedial work — If testing reveals other faults in your wiring, these need fixing before the new board can be signed off safely.
What is included in the job?
When we replace a fuseboard at MP Electrical, the work includes removal of the old board, installation of a new consumer unit to current regulations, full testing of every circuit, an Electrical Installation Certificate, and notification to Building Control through our NAPIT registration. We also label every circuit clearly so you know what each switch controls.
How long does it take?
Most fuseboard replacements are completed in a single day, typically 4-6 hours. Your power will be off for most of that time, so we always recommend planning ahead. We test everything thoroughly before switching you back on and will not leave until you are happy.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. A fuseboard replacement is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. As a NAPIT-registered electrician, we issue a full Electrical Installation Certificate and notify your local Building Control. This is important documentation if you ever sell your property.
