Old vs New: Which is in your home?

If your board looks anything like the one on the left, it’s not just outdated. It may be putting your family, your belongings, and your insurance at risk. Here’s the difference a modern consumer unit makes.

Old split-load fuseboard with half the circuits not RCD protected
Before

Old Split-Load Board

  • Half the circuits NOT RCD protected
  • Wiring from two versions of BS 7671
  • Last inspected 2019, now overdue
  • No surge protection (SPD)
  • One fault knocks out a whole bank
Modern 18th Edition metal consumer unit with RCBOs and SPD installed by MP Electrical
After

New 18th Edition Metal Consumer Unit

  • Every circuit individually RCBO protected
  • Built-in SPD, protects against surges
  • Meets current BS 7671 amendments
  • Fire-resistant steel enclosure
  • One fault = one circuit, not your whole house

6 Warning Signs You Need a New Fuseboard

If you spot any one of these, it’s time for a professional survey. If you spot two or more, don’t wait.

1

Plastic or wooden enclosure

The 18th Edition requires non-combustible metal consumer units in domestic properties. Plastic boards have been linked to house fires.

2

No RCD protection

Modern regs require RCD (residual current device) protection on every circuit. Without it, a fault could mean serious shock or fire.

3

Rewireable fuses

BS 3036 rewireable fuses are obsolete. They trip slowly, can be “fixed” with the wrong wire, and offer almost no protection.

4

No surge protection (SPD)

BS 7671 now requires surge protective devices. One lightning strike on the street can fry every device in your house without one.

5

Grouped RCDs

On older split-load boards, one fault takes out half the house: upstairs lights, freezer, the lot. RCBOs only trip the faulty circuit.

6

Burn marks, buzzing, or constant tripping

Scorching, humming, or a breaker that keeps tripping are warning signs of loose connections or an overloaded, ageing board.

Here’s a complete consumer unit upgrade from start to finish: filmed on a recent job in Rotherham so you can see exactly what’s involved, how tidy our work is, and what you’ll get for your money.

Why RCBOs Beat Old Split-Load Boards

Every MP Electrical fuseboard upgrade uses individual RCBOs, one per circuit. Here’s why that matters.

🎯 Fault isolation

Only the faulty circuit trips. Your freezer stays on when the bathroom lights fault.

⚡ Faster diagnosis

One circuit, one device, no guessing which of six circuits on a shared RCD is the problem.

🏠 Future-proof

Ready for EV chargers, solar PV, heat pumps and home batteries without another upgrade.

📜 Regs-compliant

Installed to the current edition of BS 7671, with an Electrical Installation Certificate and NAPIT building control registration for your records.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a fuseboard upgrade take?

Most standard domestic upgrades take 4 to 6 hours. Your power will be off for most of that time, but you’ll have it back on the same day.

Will I have to notify Building Control?

No: MP Electrical is NAPIT registered, so we handle the Part P Building Control notification for you and the certificate is posted directly to your home.

My current board still works, do I really need a new one?

“Working” isn’t the same as “safe”. Many old boards have no RCD protection on some circuits, use combustible plastic enclosures, or pre-date surge protection requirements. A quick survey will tell you exactly where yours stands.

What’s included in the price?

A modern 18th Edition metal consumer unit, individual RCBOs for every circuit, SPD surge protection, full testing, your Electrical Installation Certificate, and Part P notification. No hidden extras.

Do you offer a warranty?

Yes, all workmanship is guaranteed and the consumer unit itself comes with the manufacturer’s warranty. You’re also covered by NAPIT’s insurance-backed guarantee.

How much does it cost?

What it costs depends on the number of circuits and the condition of the existing wiring. We give you a firm price before any work starts. You’ll get a fixed written quote before any work begins.

No pressure, no hard sell. Just an honest assessment of your fuseboard and a clear price if you want to go ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a fuseboard replacement take?

A straightforward consumer unit replacement typically takes 4-6 hours. Your power will be off for most of this time, so we recommend planning around it. We aim to have everything back on by the end of the day.

How do I know if I need a new fuseboard?

If your fuseboard uses old-style rewirable fuses, has a wooden back, doesn’t have RCD protection, or your electrics trip frequently, it’s time for an upgrade. A modern consumer unit with RCD protection is essential for safety.

Is a fuseboard replacement a legal requirement?

If you’re a landlord and your EICR identifies the fuseboard as unsatisfactory, upgrading becomes a legal requirement. For homeowners it’s strongly recommended for safety. Any new electrical work may also require the fuseboard to meet current standards.

What is the difference between a fuse box and a consumer unit?

They do the same job but a modern consumer unit uses MCBs and RCDs instead of old rewirable fuses. RCDs detect earth faults and disconnect in milliseconds, preventing electric shocks and reducing fire risk. An upgrade is one of the best safety improvements you can make.

Do you need to notify Building Control?

Yes, a consumer unit replacement is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. As a NAPIT-registered electrician, we self-certify the work and register it with your local authority on your behalf. You receive a certificate for your records.

Fuseboard Replacement for Landlords

If you’re a landlord in Rotherham or South Yorkshire, the condition of your consumer unit directly affects your legal compliance. The Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector (England) Regulations 2020 require landlords to have an EICR carried out before each new tenancy and at least every five years. If you rent the property out, the private rented sector regulations require remedial work for a C1 or C2 observation within 28 days, or sooner if the report specifies a shorter period. If you live in the property yourself there is no legal deadline. A C1 means danger is present and a C2 means potentially dangerous, so both are worth acting on quickly either way.

In practice, a board with rewireable fuses or no RCD protection will usually attract an observation on an EICR. What code it gets depends on the condition of the installation, what the circuits actually supply and what the inspector finds on the day. That is a judgement made after testing, not something anyone can promise in advance. Upgrading to a modern 18th Edition consumer unit resolves the most common EICR failures and gives your property a clean bill of health for the next inspection. We provide a combined service, EICR plus consumer unit replacement in a single visit where possible, saving you time and getting your property compliant faster. See our full landlord electrician services.

We also work with letting agents and property management companies across Rotherham and South Yorkshire who need multiple properties inspected and upgraded on a rolling programme. Whether you have one rental property or a portfolio of fifty, we can schedule the work to minimise tenant disruption and keep your compliance paperwork in order.

Fuseboard Upgrades in Older Rotherham Properties

Rotherham has a wide range of housing stock, and the older the property, the more likely it is to have an outdated consumer unit. Pre-war properties may still have ceramic rewirable fuse boxes or even an original cut-out with individual fuse holders. 1950s to 1970s council builds often have plastic split-load boards with limited circuit protection. Even 1980s and 1990s properties may have consumer units that don’t meet current regulations.

When upgrading the consumer unit in an older property, we sometimes find that the main earthing arrangement or incoming supply needs attention too. We’ll assess the full installation during the survey and let you know if anything else needs addressing, so nothing extra appears on install day. If the wiring throughout the property is in poor condition, we’ll advise on whether a partial or full rewire would be more appropriate than just a board change.

Common issues we find in older Rotherham properties include lead sheathed cables in homes built before the war, and undersized earth conductors that won’t support modern RCD protection. Now and again we come across aluminium wiring from the 1960s and 70s, though it turns up far less often here than people expect. Each of these affects how we approach the consumer unit upgrade and what additional work may be needed to bring the installation up to current standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a fuseboard replacement take?

Most fuseboard replacements are completed in 4 to 6 hours. Your power will be off during the work, so we recommend planning accordingly.

How do I know if I need a new fuseboard?

If you have an old fuse box with rewirable fuses, a wooden back board, or no RCD protection, you should consider upgrading. A modern consumer unit with RCDs provides much better protection against electric shock and fire.

Will I get a certificate after the work?

Yes. Every fuseboard replacement comes with a BS 7671 electrical installation certificate and is registered with NAPIT building control, so you have full documentation for insurance and selling your home.

After recently moving house, I was looking to have CCTV installed and was very specific about wanting a HIK Vision setup. After doing my research, contacting Matt at MP Electrical was an easy decision – the consistently excellent reviews across multiple platforms spoke for themselves.

I completed the online enquiry while working a night shift, and I certainly wasn’t disappointed. From the initial contact through to arranging an appointment, everything was smooth and professional. Matt came out to assess the property, advised on the best camera locations, provided a clear quote, and then carried out the installation.

The service provided by Matt was second to none – professionalism and communication throughout were outstanding. I don’t often leave reviews, but they’re the reason I contacted MP Electrical in the first place.

Matt, thank you for everything. Highly recommended!
