Hot Tub Electrical Installation in Rotherham: What to Sort Before It Arrives
The tub’s been ordered. The base is half dug. The family’s already planning the first night in it.
Then someone asks the question nobody thought about: “How are we actually powering this thing?”
That’s a common call in spring and summer. People buy the hot tub first and find out afterwards that it needs proper electrics, sometimes a lot more than they expected. This guide explains what’s involved so you can plan it, ideally before you pay.

Quick answer
A plug and play hot tub runs from a 13 amp supply, but it should go into a weatherproof, RCD protected outdoor socket, not an extension lead. A hard wired hot tub usually needs its own dedicated circuit (often 32 amps or more) from your consumer unit, run in armoured SWA cable, with RCD protection and a local isolator. Get your supply checked by a qualified electrician before the tub is delivered.
Plug and play vs hard wired hot tubs
Plug and play (13 amp) hot tubs
These are sold as “just plug it in”. They run from a standard 13 amp plug, which sounds simple, and in fairness they can be.
The trade off is power. Because they’re limited to what a 13 amp supply can give, many of these tubs can’t run the heater and the jets at full whack at the same time. That’s a design limit of the tub, not a fault with your electrics.
Hard wired hot tubs
Larger rigid tubs, especially ones with bigger heaters and several pumps, are usually hard wired. The manufacturer’s installation instructions will tell you the supply they need, and it’s commonly 32 amps or more.
How to tell which one you’ve got
- Look at the specification sheet for the rated current or the recommended breaker size
- Check whether it mentions a 13 amp plug or a “dedicated supply”
- Ask the retailer for the full installation manual, not just the brochure
Some tubs are “convertible” and can be set up either way.
Why a plug and play tub still needs a proper socket
The phrase “plug and play” leads a lot of people to run the tub off an extension lead through the kitchen window. I’d strongly advise against it.
A hot tub pulls a heavy load for hours at a time. Domestic extension leads aren’t designed for that sort of continuous outdoor use, and a coiled or damaged lead can overheat.
What I’d recommend instead:
- A weatherproof outdoor socket fitted on the wall, rated for outdoor use
- RCD protection on that socket, so the supply cuts off quickly if there’s an earth fault
- Ideally its own circuit, so the tub isn’t sharing with the washing machine and the tumble dryer
- Positioned where the manufacturer’s instructions say, so the plug and socket aren’t sitting right next to the water
Some tub makers and retailers give a minimum distance between the socket and the tub. Distances vary between brands, so check your own manual rather than going by what a mate was told.

Can your house supply actually cope?
Before we quote, we look at the whole picture, not just the route from the fuse board to the garden.
Your main fuse
Most homes have a main supply fuse from the network operator. Its size limits how much power the whole house can draw at once. On older properties, including plenty of the terraces and semis around Rotherham and Barnsley, it’s often smaller than newer builds.
What else is already on the supply
A big hot tub on top of other heavy loads can add up quickly. I look at things like:
- An electric shower, which can be one of the biggest loads in the house
- An EV charger (see our EV charger installation page)
- Electric ovens and induction hobs
- Immersion heaters or storage heaters
If a lot of that could run at the same time as the tub, we need to think about it properly. Sometimes it’s fine. Sometimes the answer involves load management or a conversation with the network operator about the supply.
The consumer unit
Adding a new circuit needs space and suitable protection in your consumer unit. Older boards can lack spare ways or modern RCD protection. In those cases a consumer unit upgrade might be the sensible first step.
When we fit a new board, we put a fire extinguisher inside the consumer unit as standard, and we can offer surge protection and individual RCBO protection, so a fault on the hot tub circuit only takes out that one circuit rather than half the house. What a proper hard wired installation looks like
A typical hot tub electrical installation in Rotherham or the surrounding villages usually includes the following.
A dedicated circuit
The tub gets its own circuit from the consumer unit, sized to the manufacturer’s stated supply and the length of the run. Longer runs to the bottom of a garden in Wickersley or Bramley may need a larger cable than a short run to the patio.
SWA cable
Outdoors, we normally use steel wire armoured (SWA) cable. It’s tough and suited to outdoor runs, whether it’s clipped along a wall or buried at a suitable depth.
RCD protection
The hot tub circuit gets RCD protection. With water, bare skin and outdoor conditions involved, this is one of the most important safety features in the whole job.
A local rotary isolator
A weatherproof rotary isolator near the tub lets you switch it off completely for cleaning, maintenance or if something seems wrong. It’s positioned so it’s easy to reach and see when you’re working on the tub, but placed according to the manufacturer’s instructions so it isn’t somewhere you’d touch while sat in the water.
Following the manufacturer’s instructions
I can’t stress this enough. The tub’s installation manual sets out the supply it needs, the protection it expects and often where the connection and isolation should be. We work to those instructions and to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations.
Paperwork
A new circuit is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations for homes in England. As a NAPIT registered electrician, we notify it for you and you get the certificate for your records. You can read the government’s Approved Document P guidance if you want the detail.
The base and where the tub goes
- Level and solid: a filled tub is extremely heavy. A proper concrete slab or suitable base is worth doing right.
- Distance from the house: further away usually means a longer cable run, which can change the cable size and the cost.
- Access to the pump bay: keep the side with the electrical connection accessible for servicing.
What to ask before you buy
Before paying for a tub, ask the retailer:
- Is it plug and play, hard wired or convertible?
- What supply and breaker size does the manual state?
- Can I see the full installation manual now?
- Where is the electrical connection on the tub?
- Does it heat and run jets at the same time on 13 amps?
- What base do you recommend?

Leave enough time before delivery
Summer is busy for hot tub work across South Yorkshire, from Maltby to Doncaster and over towards Sheffield. If the tub is arriving in two weeks and nobody’s looked at the electrics, you could end up with a tub full of water and nothing to power it.
Get the electrics assessed as soon as you’re seriously considering a tub, ideally before you commit. That gives time to:
- Check the supply and consumer unit
- Sort any board upgrade if it’s needed
- Get the circuit in and tested before the tub turns up

Frequently asked questions
Can I plug a hot tub into an extension lead?
I wouldn’t. Extension leads aren’t designed for that sort of continuous heavy outdoor load. A weatherproof, RCD protected outdoor socket is a far safer option for a plug and play tub.
Does a plug and play hot tub need an electrician?
The tub itself plugs in, but if you haven’t got a suitable outdoor socket with RCD protection, a qualified electrician should fit one.
What size supply does a hard wired hot tub need?
It depends on the model. Many need 32 amps or more, but the manufacturer’s installation manual gives the exact figure for your tub.
Do I need Building Regulations sign off for hot tub electrics?
For homes in England, installing a new circuit is notifiable under Part P. A registered electrician can notify the work for you and issue a certificate.
Can my house handle a hot tub and an EV charger?

How long does a hot tub electrical installation take?
A straightforward job with a short cable run is often done in a day. Longer runs, digging or a consumer unit upgrade can add time, which is why it’s worth booking early.
